Bellevue Essentials, the city's nationally recognized 10-week civic engagement course, is now accepting applications for its 2026 cohort. The program runs from September to November, with a graduation ceremony planned in early December.
Participants in the program gain a deeper understanding of how local government works and decisions are made through hands-on activities, interactive learning and direct conversations with staff and leaders. The 10-week course explores the challenges and necessary collaborations that shape city services and community initiatives, giving graduates the knowledge to effectively engage in city decision-making, an expanded peer network and greater awareness of opportunities to get involved.
Tuition is $150, with fee waivers available. To graduate, participants must attend at least eight sessions. Classes are on Wednesdays, 5:30-8:30 p.m., with two additional Thursday evening classes and two Saturday afternoon field trips to Bellevue's neighborhoods and parks.
Applications are due by 5 p.m. Monday, July 13, and can be submitted in the following ways:
People can learn more about the program and hear from course graduates at an upcoming information session. Attendance is beneficial but not required to apply.
Register for a session.
Acceptance to Bellevue Essentials is highly competitive, as space is limited. Applicants are encouraged to write thorough and thoughtful responses.
Since the program started in 2013, more than 400 people have graduated from Bellevue Essentials. Many alumni now serve on city boards, commissions and neighborhood associations, making meaningful contributions to their community.
