Is Abbott Stock About To Rebound

For questions about this article or underlying research, email [email protected].

Over the past year, Abbott Laboratories (ABT) stock has lost 17.6%, dividends included, while the S&P 500 returned 15.1%. Shares now sit near a price where they bounced in 2023 and 2024. Investors betting on a rebound are counting on buyers to step in there again. These buyers are also relying on Abbott's new heart devices to keep sales growing faster than they used to. So how did Abbott stock do the last few times it fell to this price?

Abbott Stock Has Bounced From This Price Before

Abbott stock closed at $101.91 in November 2023 and climbed as much as 18.7% within a year. A larger bounce began from $100.73 in May 2024, when shares rose as far as 39.2% and posted their best close about nine months later. Another rally started that July at $102.03 and went almost as far.

In 2026, the price has not held on the way in. Shares fell back to within 5% of today's price in January, March, July and September 2026, sliding lower first each time.

How Much Could $10,000 In Abbott Stock Make?

An investment of $10,000 in Abbott stock at the October 21 close ($100.51) would be worth about $12,780 if shares climbed to resistance, a price where two earlier rallies stalled. The median of Abbott's seven past bounces from this price since 2020 would leave that same $10,000 worth about $12,240. The stock would need to perform a little better than its typical bounce to reach resistance. On the way, it would pass $116.51 and $118.95, two lower prices where rallies also stalled.

Is Abbott's Business Growing Fast Enough For A Rebound?

Abbott's reported sales are growing faster than their recent average, but the company is earning less on them. Revenue rose 8.1% over the twelve months to June 2026, compared to an average of 5.1% across the last three such periods. On the October 21 call, management said U.S. sales in the business selling its new Volt PFA catheter grew in the high teens during the third quarter, with momentum accelerating in September. Management also said the electrophysiology business faces a short-term drag from the left atrial appendage device market.

The weak spot is profit. Abbott's operating margin was 15.8% over the twelve months to June 2026, down from 17.4% a year earlier. On the October 21 call, management said its adjusted operating margin rose to 23.4% in the third quarter. Investors are not paying much for those sales: at 3.7 times sales at the end of September, Abbott stock was cheaper than at all but three quarter ends since 2016.

What Could Break Abbott's Support?

Shares have not held this price on any of the four drops into it since January 2026, though a July rally from $98.83 reached $116.67. Over the past two years, all four visits fell 5% before they could gain 20%. On October 21, Abbott cut its full-year comparable sales growth forecast to 6% from 7%. Management said two businesses, electrophysiology and diabetes, were behind the cut. If support breaks, the next support below is $88.96, or 13.2% under today's price.

Each time shares fell back to this price in 2026, they slid lower first, and Abbott's faster sales still arrive on a thinner margin. Comparable sales growth in its electrophysiology and diabetes businesses will be the number to watch when Abbott reports in January 2027.
