Klobuchar, Smith Secure Federal Funding for Northwestern Minnesota in Senate-Passed Legislation

WASHINGTON - U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith (D-MN) announced that Congress approved $4,500,000 in funding to advance water and wastewater infrastructure projects in Barnesville, Moorhead, and Elizabeth. The legislation now goes to the President's desk to be signed into law.

"Current water and wastewater infrastructure need to be upgraded to meet the growing needs of these northwestern cities," said Klobuchar. "The federal funding we secured will help Barnesville, Moorhead, and Elizabeth make improvements to these critical public services."

"Clean water is an essential part of healthy, thriving communities," said Smith. "I was glad to help Barnesville, Moorhead, and Elizabeth secure funding for these vital water infrastructure projects."

  • $750,000 to the City of Barnesville to reconstruct its water and sewer infrastructure.
  • $2,000,000 to the City of Moorhead to build a modernized biosolids dewatering system.
  • $1,750,000 to the City of Elizabeth to build a new drinking water and sanitary sewer system.

Klobuchar and Smith have been actively involved in securing this federal funding for projects benefiting communities across the state through a process called "Congressionally Directed Spending" (CDS). During the CDS process, Klobuchar and Smith have considered project proposals and advocated for funding in close coordination with leaders from across Minnesota. That process includes a careful vetting to protect taxpayer dollars and ensure projects are cost-effective, reliable, and well-planned.

Projects are expected to receive funding over the next several months.
