Rep. Lee Slams Trump's Reckless Tariff Plan: "This Is Gambling With Our Future"

WASHINGTON, D.C. -April 3, 2025 - Today, in response to Trump's announcement of new tariffs, Congresswoman Summer Lee (PA-12) issued the following statement, strongly opposing the administration's chaotic and harmful approach to trade:

"President Trump's reckless and chaotic tariff announcements continue to hurt working families right here in Western Pennsylvania. Our workers, small businesses, and farmers deserve trade policies that put their livelihoods and economic security first-not policies that lead to uncertainty and anxiety.

"Our region thrives when our businesses are strong and stable. That means we need clear, thoughtful, and worker-focused trade policies paired with significant investments in fair wages and protections against corporate exploitation right here at home.

"This chaos around Trump's tariffs won't just hit folks at the checkout aisle-they will hit people's retirement savings, too. When the markets swing wildly because of unpredictable trade policies, it's our communities, our neighbors, and our seniors who pay the price. Folks shouldn't have to wake up worried that their 401(k)s are shrinking because a president decided to launch a trade war overnight. We cannot call this leadership-it's reckless gambling with our future."

Congresswoman Summer Lee serves on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and the Committee on Education and the Workforce. Since taking office in January 2023, she has delivered historic levels of federal investment totaling over $2.4 Billion brought back to Western PA, including over $580 million for infrastructure, over $110 million for affordable transit, over $500 million to keep clean energy manufacturing at home in Pennsylvania, and over $55 million on clean energy efforts in and around schools to help keep our kids and communities safe. These investments will help improve Western Pennsylvania's infrastructure and transit, ensure cleaner air and drinking water, lower housing costs, fund research institutions, fuel clean manufacturing, fund STEM innovation and entrepreneurship, boost workforce development, and create thousands of good paying union jobs. Lee and her team have also delivered casework and constituent services to over 3,400 constituents with issues ranging from helping our seniors and disabled community access Medicare and social security to helping folks secure housing and helping families with immigration support and passports.
