Firefighters Extinguish Fire on Hier Ave
Syracuse, NY- On Sunday, December 29, 2024, at 12:20 p.m., Syracuse Firefighters were alerted by the Onondaga County 911 Center to a reported house on fire at 108 Hier Ave. Firefighters from Station 9 on Shuart Ave arrived at the scene three minutes later and found a two-and-a-half-story wood frame structure with a large amount of smoke from the roof's edges. A signal '99', indicating a working fire, was transmitted.
As firefighters moved hoses through the front door, other teams prepared to search the entire building. A report from an occupant outside was that everyone was out, and the fire was upstairs. Smoke detectors had alerted the occupants to the fire. Firefighters will search the structure to locate the fire and confirm everyone is out. Three hoses were stretched, two to the second floor and one to the attic. All three hoses were needed to extinguish the fire that had spread to multiple rooms on the second floor and into the attic floor. A hole was cut in the roof to allow the trapped smoke and heat in the attic out of the structure. The fire was declared out after approximately twenty minutes. Crews were on the scene for an additional two hours, clearing smoke from the building, cleaning up, and assisting investigators.
The building contains two apartments, and the fire occurred on the second floor and attic. The structure suffered significant fire, smoke, and water damage on the second floor and attic, and water damage on the first floor and basement. This fire displaced three occupants; the Red Cross is assisting them. Syracuse Fire Investigators have determined that the electrical fire started on the second floor. There were no injuries to civilians or to Fire Department personnel.
A total of 37 Fire Department Personnel responded to this incident, including command and support staff. Syracuse Police, American Medical Response, National Grid, and the American Red Cross also responded to the scene. We thank our partners at the 911 Center, SPD, AMR, National Grid, and the Red Cross.
