Security Council Holds Open Debate on 'The United Nations Organization: Looking into the Future'

On the day the UN Charter entered into force 80 years ago, the Council holds an open debate titled "The United Nations Organization: Looking into the Future" under the "Maintenance of international peace and security" agenda item.

Secretary-General António Guterres is expected to brief via videoconference.

Convened by the Russia Federation, Council president for October, the debate takes place against the backdrop of the UN80 initiative, launched by the Secretary-General in March and aimed at implementing structural reforms and programmatic alignment across the UN system to make it more effective, cost-efficient and responsive.

Speakers will focus on three questions in a concept note (document S/2025/592) prepared by the Russian Federation. They include: What could be done to ensure that the Charter is implemented in its entirety and that its purposes and principles are applied in their interrelatedness?; what concrete measures can help to overcome the current crisis of confidence, revive a culture of dialogue and strengthen the spirit of unity within the Organization, particularly in the Security Council?; and what is the long-term vision of the future of the United Nations after its eightieth anniversary, including against the backdrop of the Secretary-General's UN80 Initiative?

During the meeting, delegates are expected to adopt a draft presidential statement authored by the Russian Federation.
