Washington, D.C. - Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) today spoke on the Senate floor to celebrate Jeremy Carl withdrawing his nomination to be Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs. Leader Schumer opposed Carl's nomination due to his long history of racist, white supremacist, and antisemitic remarks and denounced the Trump administration's pattern of nominating individuals with such views. Below are Senator Schumer's remarks, which can also be viewed here:
Yesterday, Jeremy Carl, Donald Trump's nominee to serve as Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs, thank God, withdrew his nomination.
All I have to say is this: good riddance to white supremacists, right-wing bigots. Jeremy Carl had a long history of saying violent, antisemitic, and openly racist comments. And I am glad that his comments were exposed and rejected.
It is troubling that we keep seeing a pattern where Donald Trump is very much at ease nominating people with openly white supremacist and antisemitic views.
Jeremy Carl, Paul Ingrassia, and Darren Beattie are three of the clearest examples of Donald Trump being perfectly at ease appointing individuals with white supremacy and antisemitism. Both sides, both sides, Democrats and Republicans, must reject people like these and call out antisemitism no matter from where it arises.
