PHILADELPHIA, PA -Life sciences company TerraPower Isotopes has announced a $450 million investment to establish a cancer-fighting radioisotope manufacturing facility in Greater Philadelphia's Bellwether District. The company joins a rich ecosystem of radiopharmaceutical and nuclear medicine organizations contributing to the region's status as a global hub for life sciences innovation. The Chamber of Commerce for Greater Philadelphia (the Chamber) is proud to have played a role in TerraPower Isotopes' location decision by positioning Greater Philadelphia as a competitive destination for cutting-edge investment and innovation. A nationwide site selection process was conducted in partnership with Jones Long LaSalle (JLL) and Orchestra Life Sciences (OLS).
"I'm thrilled to welcome TerraPower Isotopes to our region and congratulate Chamber member HRP Group on securing such an innovative new tenant at the Bellwether District," said Chellie Cameron, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Chamber of Commerce for Greater Philadelphia. "With our region's exceptional research community, strong talent pipeline, and the Bellwether District's strategic location, TerraPower Isotopes is well positioned for long-term success in our region. I'm proud of the Chamber's role in connecting the company with cross-sector leaders in the industry and helping to bring this investment to Greater Philadelphia."
TerraPower Isotopes will lease a 250,000-square-foot, build-to-suit facility in the Bellwether District of Philadelphia and produce Actinium-225 for use in the development of cancer treatments. With this investment, TerraPower Isotopes becomes another major tenant at the Bellwether District, a 1,300-acre state-of-the-art commercial redevelopment project underway in South and Southwest Philadelphia that is reimagining the former Philadelphia Energy Solutions refinery into a hub for economic development, advanced manufacturing, and innovation.
"TerraPower Isotopes' decision affirms what we know to be true about Greater Philadelphia-this region is where cutting-edge companies come to grow," Christopher Franklin, Chairman and CEO of Essential Utilities and Chair of the Board of Directors of the Chamber. "We congratulate our partners at the City of Philadelphia and Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for their leadership in helping secure this major investment. Thanks to strong collaboration across government, business, academic, and civic partners, we continue to attract investments that create jobs, expand opportunity, and strengthen our leadership in life sciences innovation."
The Chamber worked alongside key government and private-sector partners throughout TerraPower Isotopes' evaluation process to ensure the company had deep visibility into the strength and connectivity of the region's nuclear medicine ecosystem. This collaboration included close coordination with academic research institutions, major health systems, workforce and education partners, infrastructure and utility providers, and leading industry stakeholders. Together, these partners helped highlight Greater Philadelphia's readiness to support advanced nuclear medicine and radiopharmaceutical manufacturing, reinforcing the region's value proposition and contributing meaningfully to TerraPower Isotopes' decision to select the Bellwether District.
"I am proud to work side by side with leaders of our business community to showcase Greater Philadelphia's strengths in research and medicine," said Kevin Mahoney, CEO of the University of Pennsylvania Health System. "Anchored by world-class clinical and research institutions, the region is uniquely positioned to lead the next wave of radiopharmaceutical discovery and manufacturing."
With this location decision, TerraPower Isotopes joins global industry leaders such as Eli Lilly, Nucleus Radiopharma, Novartis, Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS), Siemens Healthineers, GE Healthcare, SERB Pharmaceuticals, fueling a rapidly growing concentration of radiopharmaceutical research and development and manufacturing activity in Greater Philadelphia. The region offers a uniquely integrated ecosystem spanning isotope and radiochemistry research, leading radiotracer and radiopharmaceutical clinical trials, advanced manufacturing, and a deep talent pool. The depth of research & development infrastructure and workforce capital in Greater Philadelphia will help companies grow and allow discoveries to move quickly from lab to the clinic and ultimately to commercial production.
"TerraPower Isotopes' investment in Greater Philadelphia represents an important milestone for the future of radiopharmaceuticals and advanced nuclear medicine," said Stephen M. Hahn, M.D., Chief Executive Officer of Nucleus RadioPharma. "This region offers an unmatched combination of scientific excellence, clinical depth, and collaboration-attributes I've seen firsthand throughout my career in research, oncology, and medical product development. The decision to locate here underscores the momentum building across Greater Philadelphia and solidifies its role as a national leader in bringing next-generation therapies from discovery to patients who need them most."
"Philadelphia continues to solidify its position as a premier hub for advanced therapies. This milestone highlights the depth of the region's life sciences ecosystem and its expanding role in advancing innovation in nuclear medicine and radiopharmaceutical development. By establishing a presence here, the TerraPower Isotopes team will benefit from a highly collaborative ecosystem that will meaningfully support the company's growth trajectory."
