If you have decided to move your mobile service to a new provider, you may also want to keep your existing mobile number. We explain what is involved in transferring your number, what information you may need when switching provider, and what to know if you are using an eSIM.
Transferring your mobile number from one provider to another is known as number portability, or "porting".
You can keep your existing mobile number when changing provider, and there is no charge for transferring it. However, your number will not be transferred automatically. If you want to keep your number, you should tell your new provider when arranging the switch. While switching providers is usually free, check your contract for any possible charges, including early termination fees.
When you contact a new provider, they should lead the switching process and manage the transfer between providers. You should not need to coordinate separately with your current provider.
It may help to have the following information available:
You can agree a date up to 30 days in advance with your new provider for the switch to take place. The process takes place during business hours, should be completed in the shortest possible time and should not be delayed without reason. It should only result in a brief disruption to your service. If problems arise, you should not be without service for more than one working day, and you should be kept informed about any delays.
An eSIM is a digital SIM built into many modern mobile phones. Instead of inserting a physical SIM card, the eSIM is set up by securely downloading SIM related information from your new provider, often using a QR code. Your provider will give instructions on how to install or activate the eSIM.
If there is a delay, loss of service or another problem during the switch, your provider should keep you informed. Providers must also publish information on their websites about compensation schemes and how to make a claim where switching related problems occur.
If you experience difficulties, contact your new provider first and ask for an update on the status of your switch or number transfer.
We have further advice and information on switching your mobile provider and on eSIMs.
