LOS ANGELES - Equality California, the nation's largest statewide LGBTQ+ civil rights organization, released the following statement from Executive Director Tony Hoang in response to the Trump administration's lawsuit challenging California policies that protect the rights of transgender students to participate in school sports consistent with their gender identity:

"This lawsuit is a cruel and baseless political stunt.

California law is clear: All students deserve a fair, safe, and supportive learning environment, including the opportunity to play sports. Transgender youth are not a threat, but they continue to be targeted by the Trump Administration in a coordinated campaign of hate and misinformation.

This is not about fairness in sports-it is about erasing trans people from public life. But California won't back down. We're proud to live in a state that upholds the dignity, safety, and rights of all students.

We are grateful to leaders like Governor Newsom, Attorney General Bonta and Superintendent Thurmond for rejecting the Trump Administration's actions and defending our state's laws and the constitutional rights of all students, including transgender students. Laws that have been in place since 2013, ensuring that all students can participate in school activities consistent with their gender identity.

Equality California stands with the California Department of Education, the California Interscholastic Federation, and every school working to ensure every student can thrive."
