On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day and the National Day for Journalists Killed in the Line of Duty, established this year by the Italian Government, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani strongly reaffirms Italy's commitment to defending and promoting press freedom, not only as a pillar of democracy, but as an essential driver of progress, innovation and transparency.

Data released by UNESCO shows a worsening picture: in 2025, 96 journalists were killed - including reporters, media workers and digital content creators -a figure marking an increase from the 85 victims in 2024 and the 74 in 2023.

In many parts of the world, reporting the news means working under constant pressure, amid threats, intimidation and real risks to one's personal freedom and safety.

Italy reaffirms its leading role in promoting free, independent and safe journalism, also through active participation in multilateral initiatives such as the Media Freedom Coalition and the Freedom Online Coalition. As a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2026-2028 term, Italy will continue to strengthen the tools for safeguarding press freedom and to resolutely support those who, every day, defend the fundamental values of a democratic, open and free society, often at the risk of their own lives.
