On Tuesday, President Gitanas Nausėda and his team paid a working visit to the Šalčininkai district. The President met with Zdzislavas Palevičius, Mayor of Šalčininkai District training Municipality, and visited the Rūdininkai military training area.
President Nausėda began his visit in Krakūnai, where he laid flowers at the memorial to Gintaras Žagunis, the first border guard to die in the line of duty after the restoration of independence.
Later, the President met with the mayor of Šalčininkai district municipality. The discussions focused on the most pressing issues facing the municipality: the condition and financing of road infrastructure, central government support for attracting investment, conditions for organizing education in municipalities with ethnic minorities, and additional compensation measures for municipalities hosting military training grounds.
The President also visited the Rūdninkai military training area, where intensive work is underway to build infrastructure to accommodate a German brigade. He inspected the construction site of the first stage of the military campus, visited the heavy machine gun firing range, observed demonstration shooting exercises, and spoke with soldiers.
"Rūdninkai area is a site of strategic importance. I am glad that the work is progressing faster than planned and that a German brigade will soon be deployed here. This is an important step in strengthening Lithuania's security and clear proof of our close cooperation with Germany," said the President.
According to the President, the current security situation requires strong allied support, which makes the presence of German troops in Lithuania particularly important. The military infrastructure being developed in Rūdninkai will be comparable to that of a medium-sized town - 4,000 soldiers will be stationed and trained here.
"Together with our allies, we are strengthening our defense capabilities and creating conditions for the region to become more attractive for the economy, investment, and community life," emphasized the President.
At the end of his visit, the President, as is his tradition, met with the Šalčininkai District community in Baltoji Vokė, where he discussed issues of concern to local residents.
