James Lloyd, astronomer and spacecraft engineer, dies at 55

James Lloyd, professor of astronomy in the College of Arts and Sciences (A&S) who worked at the intersection of astronomy, instrumentation and spacecraft engineering to find innovative ways to study and characterize exoplanets, died on July 15 in Ithaca. He was 55.

Lloyd researched the properties of extrasolar planets and developed astronomical instruments with expertise in a wide range of detectors and imaging techniques. A member of the faculty of the Department of Astronomy since 2004, Lloyd was also appointed to the mechanical and aerospace engineering faculty in the Cornell Duffield College of Engineering in 2012.

"Jamie had a rare ability to move comfortably among astronomy, instrumentation and spacecraft engineering," said Mason Peck, the Stephen J. Fujikawa '77 Professor of Astronautical Engineering in Duffield Engineering. "He brought an infectious curiosity and a determination to make ambitious ideas real. His generosity toward students, his loyalty to friends and colleagues, his delight in a difficult problem, and the energy and originality he brought to every conversation made Cornell a more imaginative and compassionate place."

Over the years, Lloyd and Peck pursued several ideas together, including a student-built satellite for ultraviolet analysis of extrasolar planets, and a proposed small satellite to better understand zodiacal dust. Lloyd served as principal investigator on several Cornell satellite missions.

Born in Vienna on Jan. 4, 1971, Lloyd grew up in Australia but spent much of his childhood abroad because his father, Peter Lloyd, was a diplomat, serving among other postings as Australian ambassador to Iraq during the 1990-91 Gulf War.

He earned his bachelor's degree in physics at the University of New South Wales in 1994. He received his Ph.D. in 2002 from the University of California, Berkeley, where he was a Fulbright Postgraduate Scholar. A Robert A. Millikan Prize Postdoctoral Scholar at the California Institute of Technology, Lloyd joined the Cornell faculty in 2004.

"Jamie had a vivid, visceral understanding of physics, optics and astronomy," said David Chernoff, professor and chair of astronomy (A&S).

Ira Wasserman, the Kenneth A. Wallace Professor of Astronomy and professor of physics, emeritus (A&S), said Lloyd was a creative and experimental astrophysicist.

"He was an early champion of a technique called aperture masking interferometry, which allows observations of distant stars within the exquisite spatial resolution needed to observe their low mass companions such as planets," Wasserman said, noting that a version of this type of instrument is deployed on the James Webb Space Telescope.

Lloyd excelled as a mentor and teacher of astronomy at all levels, colleagues said. His graduate and postdoctoral students have gone on to join the faculty of Boston University, Pennsylvania State University and the University of Tarapacá in Chile, among others.

"Jamie was the consummate caring professor," said Jonathan Lunine, the David C. Duncan Professor in the Physical Sciences, emeritus (A&S) and chief scientist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at the California Institute of Technology. "He dedicated his career both to cutting-edge research and to excellence in teaching - not only in the classroom, where he excelled, but also and most especially in the laboratory and observatory."

Lloyd maintained the Hartung-Boothroyd Observatory as a critical teaching facility, mainly for upper-level undergraduate courses, keeping it functioning amid declining budgets year after year, Lunine said. He also led an undergraduate teaching laboratory "of a caliber that is increasingly rare among universities."

Among other honors, Lloyd received a NASA Group Achievement Award in 2018 and was named a Cornell University Outstanding Educator in 2009. He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences Astro 2010 Decadal Survey. His research led him to winter over twice at Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station in 1995 and '96, for which he was awarded the United States Navy Antarctica Service Medal with Gold Winterover Bar.

He devoted much of his spare time volunteering with the Greek Peak Adaptive Snowsports program and the Special Olympics in New York, helping children with disabilities discover the joys of skiing.

He is survived by his wife, Aoise Stratford, and children Rowena, Gwendolyn and Hugo.
