One year ago today, a new chapter in American rail and Amtrak history began.
On August 28, 2025, Amtrak introduced NextGen Acela, ushering in a new era of rail across the Northeast Corridor (NEC) and setting a new standard for comfort, connectivity, and customer experience. The launch marked the debut of an all-new, premium fleet designed to serve customers between Boston, New York, Washington, D.C., and communities in between.
As we celebrate NextGen Acela's first birthday, it's an opportunity to reflect on a year of milestones and accomplishments:
A Bold Vision Comes to Life
When NextGen Acela entered service last year, it represented far more than a new train. Built in the United States with a domestic supply chain that included over 180 U.S. suppliers across 29 states, the trainsets deliver higher capacity, enhanced comfort, and advanced onboard technology. From brighter interiors with large windows, to wide ergonomic seats with plenty of legroom and winged privacy headrests, and 5G-enabled Wi-Fi and improved accessibility features, every detail was designed with today's travelers in mind. The results and customer feedback speak for themselves.
Customers frequently describe the NextGen Acela trains as sleek, modern, and a significant upgrade over the original Acela fleet with a ride that is smooth, quiet, relaxing, and comfortable.
Here's to the Next Chapter
As we continue to experience record demand for Amtrak - our growing NextGen Acela fleet is allowing us to expand our Acela schedule at a perfect time to serve more customers during the busy Fall travel season. Throughout the year we've grown Acela service, and our next addition will be this coming Monday, August 31st when we will reach 37% more weekday departures, 75% more Saturday departures and 43% more Sunday departures than we had prior to our NextGen Acela fleet launch.
As we celebrate this first birthday, we're also looking ahead. Next year, we'll also introduce our next new fleet on the Northeast Corridor, Amtrak Airo, which will serve customers traveling on Amtrak's Northeast Regional route. With our new fleets, Amtrak will deliver the benefits of modern rail travel to many more customers throughout the Northeast Corridor and throughout America.
Here's to many more miles ahead. Happy First Birthday, NextGen Acela!
