JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Following last weekend's severe storms impacting much of the state, the Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance reminds Missourians who have questions or concerns about their insurance coverage to contact the department's Consumer Hotline at 800-726-7390 or visit insurance.mo.gov/consumers.
In 2025, DCI's Consumer Affairs Division recovered a record-shattering $46.2 million on behalf of Missouri consumers. Insurance experts are available to provide direct assistance, address questions, investigate claims and complaints, and mediate disputes about coverage.
"Missourians are no strangers to severe weather, but navigating insurance after a storm can be confusing and overwhelming," DCI Director Angela Nelson said. "If you have questions about your coverage or need help understanding your policy or the claims process, our team is here to help - and our services are completely free. Let us be your first call."
If your property has been damaged, be sure to document it and take photos before making any temporary repairs. Keep receipts for emergency fixes, and contact your insurance company promptly to begin the claims process.
The department's post-disaster claims guide is a great starting point for those beginning the recovery process after severe weather. DCI also has several other useful tools and resources to help those affected by recent storms.

It's also important to review your policy deductible, as it can change at renewal, and there can be separate deductibles for different types of loss. Most standard homeowners policies cover damage caused by fire, lightning, wind and hail. Flood and earthquake damage, however, are not typically covered and must be purchased separately.
In addition to reviewing your policy, here are a few additional steps you can take to prepare:
