On 26 November 2025, our Partner, Abraham Sylvester Harryandi, had the honor of moderating a high-impact session at the Indonesia International Transport Summit 2025 (IITS 2025) with the theme "Walkable Cities: Enabling Transit-Oriented Development Through Policy and Investment." The panel brought together an exceptional lineup of speakers, including Farchad Mahfud (Business Development Director, MRT Jakarta), Wendy Haryanto (Executive Director, Jakarta Property Institute), Prof. Yos Sunitiyoso (Bandung Institute of Technology), and Dr. Leong Siew Mun (ITS Malaysia). Together, they explored how cities can evolve into more pedestrian-friendly and investment-ready environments through a combination of intelligent transport systems, data-driven urban planning, and effective policies.
During the session, Abraham guided an insightful discussion on the role of "smart" Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) in expanding urban mobility. He explored how intelligent transportation technology can be utilized by TOD operators, demonstrating how digital layers such as IoT sensors and MaaS apps can extend station catchment areas and reduce reliance on traditional park-and-ride facilities. The panelists further emphasized data as a driver for investment, highlighting how footfall analytics and predictive modeling can convince developers and policymakers that walkable areas are not only beneficial for citizens but also profitable.
The discussion further emphasized the human element, focusing on how behavioral science and technology can work together to shift commuter habits from driving to walking. Topics included digital nudges, and smart pedestrian safety systems, illustrating that creating walkable cities requires more than sidewalks, it requires engaging people to use them. The session concluded with insights into future trends, including seamless mobility, lifestyle apps integrated with TODs, and the evolving role of autonomous vehicles.
The session concluded with a forward-looking conversation on the future of mobility, touching on seamless multimodal integration, TOD-linked lifestyle ecosystems, and the evolving role of autonomous vehicles in reshaping last-mile connectivity.
This session underscored the powerful intersection of policy, technology, and human behavior in designing cities that are walkable, sustainable, and appealing for long-term investment. Indonesia is taking meaningful strides toward future-ready urban environments, places where walking is not only possible, but enjoyable and deeply embedded in everyday life.
