The disruption in the Strait of Hormuz has caused major shocks to global oil supplies. The International Energy Agency warns that the European Union has sufficient aviation fuel reserves for about six weeks and that there may be systemic shortages of aviation fuel in the near future. Member States, as well as the European Union itself, are therefore calling on individuals and businesses to save fuel and reduce travel.
Airlines are already cancelling flights and grounding part of their fleets. Lufthansa has announced that it is cutting 20 000 short-haul flights over the summer on account of the sharp increase in fuel prices and the drop in profitability of many routes. Other airlines are also temporarily reducing connections or increasing ticket prices, passing on the rising costs to passengers.
