McCormick Doing River Restoration Work in Idaho

Northern Michigan University alumnus Brady McCormick developed a passion for habitat restoration while pursuing a bachelor's degree in environmental studies and sustainability. The 2024 grad is now doing similar work professionally with the Idaho Fish and Game River Restoration program.

"At NMU, I was fortunate to learn from professors who emphasized both strong scientific foundations and hands-on field experience," McCormick said. "Their mentorship in ecology, hydrology and horticulture gave me the confidence to step directly into restoration work after graduation."

One of his southern Idaho projects focused on restoring mesic meadow systems, which are ecosystems with a moderate, consistent moisture supply that support lush grass and herb growth. A recent decline in water system accessibility across this type of ecosystem caused McCormick to get involved.

The goal of his project was to improve the water system function of the areas, reconnect floodplains and raise local water tables to support riparian vegetation recovery. This restoration work contributed to improved habitat conditions for many species, such as Sage-Grouse, Columbia spotted frog and numerous other riparian-dependent species.

"This experience has given me confidence in my abilities and a deeper appreciation for ecosystem restoration," McCormick explained. "It's shown me that the work we do in the field has tangible and long lasting impacts. Being a part of that process is incredibly rewarding."

McCormick thanks his NMU professors and mentors, including Dr. Matt Van Grinsven, who helped shape how he approaches environmental work. Through his education, he learned to view ecosystems as interconnected systems and emphasized careful observation in the field.

"I encourage current students to stay curious and be willing to step outside their comfort zone," McCormick stated. "Some of the most valuable growth happens during challenging field projects or classes that push you. Say yes to opportunities, even if you don't feel 100% ready."
