John and Louise Daniels Historical Plaque Unveiling

Chairman Don Wiley and Public Information Officer Jessica Douglas attended the ceremony, held at the Royal Community Building, where a new commemorative plaque was unveiled to recognize the Daniels family's lasting contributions.

In 1891, John and Louise Daniels donated land that led to the establishment of the first African American school in Sumter County. Their commitment to education and community uplift created opportunities for generations of students and continues to inspire progress today.

"The story of John and Louise Daniels is one of generosity, courage, and a deep belief in the power of education," said Commissioner Wiley. "Their legacy reminds us that lasting change begins when individuals invest in their community and in the future."

The new plaque was installed inside the Royal Community Building, a place that remains a central gathering point and symbol of strength for the community. The ceremony brought together family members, community leaders, and residents to celebrate the Daniels' enduring impact on Sumter County's history.

A special acknowledgment was given to Ms. Zelma Jenkins for her vision, dedication, and leadership in bringing this recognition forward. Her efforts ensured that the Daniels' story continues to be shared and celebrated for generations to come.

"The Board of County Commissioners is proud to stand with the Royal community in honoring this remarkable legacy," said Wiley. "By recognizing the Daniels family's contributions, we also celebrate the spirit of unity and progress that defines Sumter County."

The unveiling serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving local history and honoring those whose actions laid the groundwork for future generations.
