Story Telling Event
South Sound Story Guild is proud to present Elizabeth Lord, storyteller extraordinaire, co-producer of Story Oly, and creator of the Lord Franzannian Vaudeville Show, as our featured storyteller. Following will be our Story Swap where audience members are invited to tell their stories. At SSSG we foster an appreciation for the art and tradition of storytelling in our community through monthly story concerts and events. StoryOly Season 12!
Everybody has a story. We want to hear yours!
Come share your personal experience on stage or just listen to great live oral storytelling at Olympia's premiere story slam: STORYOLY.
StoryOLy is Olympia's community storytelling event and contest that was created by Amy Shephard and Elizabeth Lord in 2015. It is modeled after the nationally known Moth Story Hour. Each month people from all different backgrounds and experiences tell a true personal story (8 minutes or less in duration) that reflects that month's theme. They are moving, sometimes funny, and always real.

Three volunteer judges in the audience score each teller on a scale from 1-10. The highest scoring teller wins a cash prize, tee-shirt and then moves on to the grand slam which takes place in September 2027 at the Capitol Theater.

Each month StoryOly donates a portion of the money collected at the door to a local organization doing good work in our community. Last season StoryOly donated a total $5,758 to variety of organizations.

This is a very popular event. It is advised that attendees arrive quite early to secure a seat. Outside food is welcome - arrive early, bring some take out, eat dinner and then enjoy the storytelling!
  • Every THIRD Tuesday of the month, November - August.
  • 6:30 pm Teller sign-up
  • 7:00-9:00 pm Storytelling
  • The Brotherhood Lounge 119 N. Capital Way Olympia WA 98501
  • www.storyoly.com
StoryOly offers three separate storytelling WORKSHOPS a season to help storytellers discover and shape their tales. Taught by accomplished storyteller, Elizabeth Lord. They are November 14, February 20, and May 22. More info at www.professionaltalker.com

Community Roots Listening Session

Community Roots is an oral history project facilitated by Window Seat Media that collects the memories and wisdom of local artists and visionaries, community organizers and caregivers. Join us October 29 to listen to stories from the archive and reflect on these questions:

  • What work is happening to care for the people, land, and traditions of our communities?
  • What themes and questions do these stories reveal?
  • How can we put this local knowledge to use, today?

Your answers and ideas will help grow this community archive! Community Roots will be publicly accessible via a website curated by Window Seat Media, with the full story archive housed at The Evergreen State College Archives.

New Works : South Sound Choreographers Showcase
The first ever South Sound Choreographers showcase is hitting Olympia's historical Capital Theater on November 7th and 8th. This event will showcase contemporary dance works by local choreographers, co-produced by Sydney Blanchard Artistic Director of Moving Parts Dance Company and freelance artist Alice Grendon of Growing Wildhearted//DanCEthropocene. Thurston County is blessed with many dance studios offering dance education for young people and two fabulous ballet companies. There are dance classes for adults who wish to continue dancing as a hobby or pastime. The first annual South Sound Choreographer's Showcase is something a little different and is specifically aimed at uplifting the work of adult professional dancers and choreographers in contemporary dance mediums who live and work here in the South Puget Sound. Join us to see works created by choreographers from Pierce, Thurston, and Lewis counties!
