ERO New Orleans helps ensure child’s safety

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - During routine enforcement operations in Murfreesboro on July 13, ICE officers from Enforcement and Removal Operations New Orleans observed a small child, approximately two years old, unattended and clad in only a heavily soiled diaper. Officers noticed the child appeared to have been under no adult supervision for several hours and was in immediate danger after wandering into a roadway, nearly being struck by a passing vehicle.

The team of ICE officers, some of whom are fathers themselves, acted quickly, securing the child's safety and calling the Murfreesboro Police Department for help. While waiting for police to arrive, officers found the child's mother asleep inside a nearby apartment with the door open, unaware her son had wandered away from her.

"Our officers are trained to respond to emergencies and protect the public, no matter the circumstances," said ERO New Orleans acting Field Office Director Scott Ladwig. "We're grateful that our team was able to act quickly and help ensure this child's safety. Supporting our communities and working alongside local law enforcement is a responsibility we take seriously."

The Murfreesboro Police Department assumed responsibility of the child and reported that the mother told officers this was the first time her child had left the home unsupervised. Fortunately, police found the child unharmed and returned him safely to his mother. At the time of this release, police have filed no criminal charges. Officials said the Tennessee Department of Children's Services was notified to ensure the child's continued welfare.
