Research Weeks keynote address to focus on AI’s role in reshaping higher education and research

By

Artificial intelligence is no longer a future consideration for higher education - it is a present-day force reshaping how we discover knowledge, drive innovation and prepare the next generation of leaders. To conclude Virginia Commonwealth University's 2026 Research Weeks, AI expert Alex Goryachev will deliver a keynote address on April 29 that will explore how universities are uniquely positioned to lead this transformation, not simply adapt to it.

Drawing on real-world examples and Goryachev's experience advising institutions and enterprises worldwide, he will examine how AI is accelerating research and discovery, redefining the relationship between faculty and technology and creating new demands on institutional strategy. He will also address the ethical responsibilities that come with AI adoption and will offer a practical framework for building cultures that are both innovative and accountable.

Goryachev will seek to leave attendees with a clearer understanding of where AI is headed, what it means for higher education specifically and how VCU can move from reactive to intentional in shaping what comes next.

Srirama Rao, Ph.D., VCU's vice president for research and innovation, will deliver opening remarks.

Date: April 29, 2026

Time: 3 - 5 p.m.

Location: VCU College of Health Professions, 900 E. Leigh St., Room 1050 (ground floor). A reception will follow in the atrium.
