How we're helping the world prepare for natural disasters

Today is International ShakeOut Day, when millions practice earthquake drills. Our Android Earthquake Alerts System turns smartphones into a global network that can warn people before shaking arrives, and it's expanding to more countries and regions.

When a natural disaster strikes, early warnings and trusted information help people prepare, respond, and stay safe. Earthquakes are only one part of our crisis resilience efforts at Google. Our AI models also help people prepare for other natural disasters:

  • Floods: Our flood forecasting technology provides up to seven days' notice for riverine floods for more than two billion people in 150 countries and up to 24 hours' notice for urban flash floods.
  • Cyclones: WeatherNext can predict cyclones up to 15 days out.
  • Wildfires: Near-real-time fire boundary maps are live in 34 countries, and FireSat, a global satellite constellation, is designed to detect and track fires as small as a classroom within 20 minutes once completed.

In 2025 alone, Google helped connect people with crisis information more than 10 million times per day, on average.

Our north star is simple yet ambitious: No one should be surprised by a natural disaster.

Learn more about our progress on crisis resilience and how we are working with partners and communities around the world to better prepare for natural disasters in our new Crisis Resilience white paper.
