Chesapeake's Department of Public Utilities is proudly joining communities across North America in celebration of Drinking Water Week, May 4-10, 2025. Chesapeake's Mayor Rick West has issued a proclamation declaring special recognition of the week and the vital role of clean, safe drinking water in our daily lives, including its importance for public health and environmental protection.
"Drinking Water Week is a time to celebrate the incredible journey of our water, from source water, to treatment, to our taps," said AWWA CEO David LaFrance. "This year, we invite communities to explore the science and recognize the dedicated professionals behind our water, who ensure every drop meets the highest standards of quality and safety."
In commemoration of the week, interactive displays designed in cooperation by Chesapeake Public Libraries and the Department of Public Utilities are available at the Russell Memorial Library, located at 2808 Taylor Road, and the Central Library, at 298 Cedar Road, throughout the entire month of May. The partnership between the two City departments provides families with an opportunity to explore a variety of water-themed children's books, obtain educational resources on how water is protected, cleaned, and delivered within the community, and enjoy a selection of giveaway items, while supplies last.
David Jurgens, Director of Chesapeake's Department of Public Utilities, expressed the goal of collaborating with local libraries to help spotlight the importance of safe drinking water in the community.
"We're really grateful to the library staff for showing us how to make learning about our City's water supply a splashy, fun adventure for kids and people of all ages," Jurgens stated. "Our team works tirelessly to keep the water flowing around the clock, 365 days per year while upholding the highest standards of quality and safety. We're hopeful these displays, books, and resources turn learning about that process into a wave of fun for everyone."
