SIUE's Howard Rambsy II Co-Authors New Book on Black Writers and Literary Reception

For years, Howard Rambsy II, PhD, Distinguished Research Professor in Southern Illinois University Edwardsville's Department of English Language and Literature, and his brother, Kenton Rambsy, a professor of literature at Howard University, collected data on African American writers, tracking how newspapers, anthologies, scholarly journals and other institutions shaped public awareness of Black authors.

Their research became the foundation for "One Black Writer at a Time: How Literary Coverage Shapes Reception," a new book published by Bloomsbury Academic. The book examines how literary coverage influences which Black writers become widely recognized while many others receive far less attention. The literary researchers explore what they call the "one Black writer idea," the long-standing concern that media outlets, publishers, critics, and educators routinely elevate one or only a small number of Black writers at any given time.

"'One Black Writer at a Time' charts how increased media attention for select writers raises their visibility and value while simultaneously diminishing the contributions of many others," wrote the authors. "By quantifying writer visibility in newspapers and magazines, anthologies, and scholarly discourse, we reveal the uneven reception of Black writers and the mechanisms that contribute to this imbalance."

The book examines several key areas, including how The New York Times covers Black writers, how literature anthologies influence literary reputations, how Toni Morrison became one of the most celebrated writers in American culture, and how the careers of Colson Whitehead and Ta-Nehisi Coates illuminate recurring dynamics of literary visibility. The study concludes by drawing on data about more than 1,000 Black writers to identify broader patterns of recognition and marginalization in contemporary literary culture.

For the Rambsys, the project grew out of years of scholarly work involving what they describe as "literary data work"-the process of transforming bibliographies into large datasets and using spreadsheets, visualizations, and quantitative analysis to identify patterns in African American literary history.

"Working with spreadsheets and quantitative information allowed us to identify patterns in literary production and develop big-picture views of Black writers, writing, and their receptions," the authors wrote. "Literary data work encouraged us to consider dozens, sometimes hundreds, of Black writers at once."

The book also reflects the brothers' longstanding interest in documenting and expanding knowledge about African American literary production. Their research draws on extensive data about Black poets, novelists, playwrights, short story writers, scholars, comic book writers, and cartoonists, allowing them to trace literary trends across generations, genres, and media platforms.

Earlier this year, SIUE's Professor Rambsy also published "Writing Black Panther: Ta-Nehisi Coates and Representation Struggles," a study of Coates's work on Marvel's "Black Panther" comics.

He hopes "One Black Writer at a Time" will appeal to readers interested in African American literature, literary history, media studies, publishing, reception studies and digital humanities. He also believes the book will encourage scholars, students, and general readers to think more broadly about the hundreds of Black writers whose contributions remain outside the literary spotlight.
