On May 6, CanAm joined government officials, community leaders, and industry partners at The Bellwether District in South Philadelphia to mark a significant moment in the transformation of one of the country's most ambitious urban redevelopment projects.
The occasion was the groundbreaking of a new advanced manufacturing facility for TerraPower Isotopes (TPI), a nuclear science company that will produce actinium-225 at the site. Actinium-225 is a rare isotope used in targeted alpha therapy, an emerging approach to cancer treatment that delivers radiation directly to cancer cells. TPI's facility will be one of the largest producers of the isotope in the world.
Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle L. Parker addresses the crowd. The ceremony drew a remarkable cross-section of support. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro announced the project earlier this year, with the Commonwealth committing $50 million in combined state funding and infrastructure investment. Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle L. Parker attended and addressed the crowd, capturing the significance of the moment plainly: "Philadelphia is ready to lead in advanced manufacturing."
Pennsylvania DCED Secretary Rick Siger reinforced why the site attracted this level of attention: "Pennsylvania is aggressively competing for and winning major innovation projects."
CanAm CEO Tom Rosenfeld and Head of Sales Min Wu look at a model of the site.TPI's decision to locate at The Bellwether District came after evaluating more than 350 potential sites across the United States. The selection reflects the strength of what HRP Group has been building here since acquiring the former Philadelphia Energy Solutions refinery, a 1,300-acre site less than three miles from Center City. DrinkPAK, a major beverage manufacturer, was the site's first operational tenant, opening a 1.4 million-square-foot facility last year. TPI's groundbreaking marks the beginning of the Innovation Campus, a district within Bellwether positioned to attract life sciences and advanced manufacturing tenants.
