This week, the Fort Worth City Council voted to change the name of a one-mile portion of White Settlement Road in response to a street renaming application submitted by the developer of the new Westside Village development.
The impacted area is located between University Drive and North Henderson Street.
The developer's request is not unusual for a project of this size. Westside Village will span several city blocks, reshaping the area and bringing with it new restaurants, hotels, public space and significant amounts of new office space. The project will also facilitate infrastructure improvements supporting both the development and the surrounding neighborhood, which will help mitigate the area's stormwater and flood control challenges.
The renaming decision is also not without precedent, as several notable local developments - Clearfork, the Fort Worth Stockyards, Bell and Tarleton - have either renamed entire streets or sections of a street to reinforce their project's strong brand and sense of place.
Even Fort Worth City Hall changed its address to 100 Fort Worth Trail after moving into its new location - replacing the building's original address of 100 Energy Way, which was itself based on the building being the one-time home of the Chesapeake Energy headquarters.
With final approval of the application, City staff will work to implement the street renaming process, which includes alerting the following departments and agencies on behalf of impacted property owners to ensure that local services are not interrupted by this name change - including mail delivery, utilities, emergency services, online wayfinding and more:
A notice of the proposed name change was sent on Oct. 6 to the property owners located along both sides of the street within 300 feet of the impacted portion of White Settlement Road. Street signs will be replaced at the applicant's expense, and the City will begin changing them on Oct. 28 - a process that should take approximately four weeks to complete.
