SNAP freeze: A crisis for New York families

Nearly 3 million New Yorkers, including 1.8 million in New York City alone, could lose access to food assistance through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) if federal funding halts on Saturday, November 1.

New York's food pantries are already at a breaking point, with 47 million visits a year, an 87% increase since 2019. Without intervention, our city and state face a humanitarian crisis.

On Thursday, October 30, United Way of New York City (UWNYC) convened government and nonprofit leaders from across New York State for an emergency briefing to discuss the impact of the potential SNAP benefits freeze and what can be done to protect millions of New Yorkers.

Join the call to action

We're calling on Governor Hochul and Mayor Adams to authorize $655 million in emergency EBT benefits to cover November SNAP payments. Together, we can make sure no family is left behind.

Act now
