With classes resuming on Monday, Aug. 24, 2026, families traveling to and from City High School and Longfellow Elementary School should be aware of street closures and changes to pedestrian routes due to the Court Street Reconstruction Project.
Drivers and pedestrians should use extra caution in the area and follow posted signs.
City High School
Court Street will remain closed between Muscatine Avenue and Seventh Avenue, and from Seventh Avenue through Third Avenue.
Court Street will be open between Third Avenue and First Avenue to allow access to the southeast parking area near the tennis courts.
Families traveling to City High from the southeast should use First Avenue, Second Avenue, Fifth Avenue, or Seventh Avenue to access school property.
First Avenue and Second Avenue
Access to the southeast parking area near the tennis courts remains open from First Avenue and Second Avenue. Both streets have sidewalks.
Students and staff also can use the Court Street (#2) bus, which stops at Second Avenue and Court Street.
Fifth Avenue
Fifth Avenue provides north-south access to City High's southwest parking lot. There are no sidewalks along Fifth Avenue, so pedestrians should use another route.
Streets without Court Street access
Pedestrians and drivers cannot access Court Street from:
City High School will provide updates or any changes due to weather.
Longfellow Elementary School
Work on retaining walls, landscaping, and other finishing elements continues on Court Street, west of Seventh Avenue. Sidewalk availability may change as work continues.
Students walking to Longfellow Elementary should use Seventh Avenue, where a crossing guard will assist them in crossing Muscatine Avenue.
The section of Court Street between Seventh Avenue and Muscatine Avenue is expected to reopen in October. When it reopens, the crossing guard will move to the Court Street and Muscatine Avenue intersection.
Additional updates will be provided through the school and neighborhood association.
