Events recognizing Black History Month planned at Montana State University

BOZEMAN - The Montana State University community is invited to honor Black History Month with a series of free events on the MSU campus. From interactive events to films and speakers, events hosted by the MSU Student Commons and MSU Library will touch upon history, culture and more.

"This celebration reflects what the Student Commons is about: creating space where people feel welcome, curious and connected," said Sophia Bielsky, director of the Student Commons.

A complete schedule follows:

  • Toni Morrison lecture screening and documentary showing: Wednesday, Feb. 18, in Strand Union Building 185. Morrison, a Nobel Prize-winning author whose work reshaped American literature, is widely recognized for her powerful explorations of memory, identity and the Black experience. In recognition of Morrison's birthday, the Student Commons will screen her 1993 Nobel lecture at 10 a.m. and the documentary "Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am" at noon. The event will include optional writing prompts and book giveaways.
  • Douglass Day Transcribe-a-thon: Daily from 1 to 4 p.m. through Feb. 20 in the Renne Library. Part of the MSU Library's Informed Citizenry Initiative, the transcribe-a-thon honors author, abolitionist and civil rights champion Frederick Douglass. The event is centered around crowdsourced transcription of Library of Congress collections and will feature music, speakers and voter registration.
  • Student Commons Black History Month Film Series: Feb. 19, 23 and 25 in the Strand Union Building's Procrastinator Theater. Each screening invites attendees to engage in powerful storytelling that explores identity, belonging, creativity, grief, resistance and community. "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" will screen Thursday, Feb. 19; "Drumline" will screen on Monday, Feb. 23; and "Soul" will screen on Wednesday, Feb. 25. Each film will begin at 5:30 p.m.
