eBay Achieves Sustainability Milestone A Year Ahead of Schedule

eBay News Team

This Earth Day, eBay celebrates a significant milestone in our sustainability efforts.

Sustainability has always been core to who we are. For nearly 30 years, we've promoted meaningful, responsible consumption by making it easy for people to give items a second life and help preserve the world's finite resources. But sustainability isn't just about what happens on the platform - it's also about how we operate as a company.

This Earth Day, themed "Our Power, Our Planet," we're proud to share a major milestone. We set an ambitious goal to fuel all eBay operations with renewable energy by 2025. As of 2024 - a full year early - 100% of the electricity used in eBay-controlled offices and data centers now supported by renewable sources.

This achievement is a key part of our broader Impact goals, which span emissions reduction, renewable energy, economic empowerment, charitable giving, and the expansion of recommerce. Like many other tech companies, our largest direct environmental footprint comes from energy used in our offices, authentication centers, and data centers. Transitioning fully to renewable sources is one of the most effective ways we can reduce our operational impact - and we've done it.

Looking ahead, we've committed to reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across our value chain by 2045 and have set carbon reduction goals that have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi):

  • By 2030: Reduce Scope 1 and 2* emissions by 90% and Scope 3 downstream transportation and distribution emissions by 27.5% from a 2019 baseline.

  • By 2045: Reduce all direct, upstream, and downstream emissions by at least 90% from a 2019 baseline.

Protecting the planet requires collective effort. By empowering communities to make more meaningful choices in shopping and business and shifting the way we power our work, we're doing our part to help build a cleaner, more prosperous world for all. From 2021 to 2025, we aim to create $22 billion in positive economic impact, avoid 8 million metric tons of carbon emissions, and avoid 350,000 metric tons of waste through selling pre-owned and refurbished items on eBay. We've made good progress so far, and look forward to sharing the latest updates in our 2024 Impact Report this May.
