Are you passionate about helping others? Join the Raleigh-Wake Emergency Communications Center team and make a real difference in your community!

Here is some key information about our next training academy:

  • Application period: March 2 through March 22
  • Academy start date: Thursday, June 4 (the academy lasts for 12 to 14 weeks)
  • Starting salary: $49,100 (no experience required)

Application Process

Your path to becoming a call taker or a telecommunicator includes:

1. Application review: Submit your application by March 22 before 11:59 p.m.

2. Employment skills test: Qualified applicants will complete the CritiCall assessment, evaluating skills such as:

  • Data entry
  • Typing speed and accuracy
  • Spelling
  • Reading comprehension

3. Panel interview: Pass the test and move on to a virtual panel interview.

4. Next steps: Recommended candidates will complete:

  • Criminal background check
  • Psychological evaluation
  • Additional pre-employment requirements

Academy Training and Job Duties

During the academy, you'll receive hands-on training to become a 9-1-1 Call Taker or Telecommunicator. Core responsibilities include:

  • Answering emergency (9-1-1), non-emergency, and administrative calls
  • Gathering critical information from callers
  • Entering data into the Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) system
