New York, NY-

Today, NY Attorney General Leticia James announced a $1.1 million settlement with JBS Food Company, the world's largest producer of beef products, for allegedly misleading consumers by advertising that the operations would reach "net zero" greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.

The following statement is attributed to Peter Lehner, Managing Attorney, Sustainable Food and Farming program at Earthjustice:

"We congratulate NY Attorney General Leticia James and her team for both pursuing and resolving this case. JBS continued to make statements that the National Advertising Division - and industry self-regulatory body - had found to be unsubstantiated; it recommended that JBS discontinue these statements. JBS ignored that decision and continued to make these climate claims, so it was necessary and important for the New York Attorney General to step in to protect consumers. Now, JBS will stop making these allegedly false and misleading claims, and their settlement payment will be used to support New York farmers to face the climate crisis."
