On 6 October 2025, Santillana Spain and Cambridge University Press & Assessment signed a historic agreement that seeks to transform English language teaching in Spanish state schools. The objective is clear: to ensure that all students have access to excellent English language teaching that opens up new learning opportunities and a brighter future.
This alliance combines Cambridge's international excellence and pedagogical innovation with Santillana's in-depth knowledge and reach within the Spanish education system, developing pedagogical solutions tailored to the real needs of public schools.
The project involves the creation of innovative resources covering all educational levels, from pre-school to sixth form. These materials not only reinforce language skills but also promote a culture of assessment as a learning tool, in line with international standards.
The agreement comes at a key moment: the inclusion of English in the PISA report at a global level, where Cambridge has collaborated with the OECD to design the test that will measure English language proficiency for the first time in 2025.
The collaboration between Santillana and Cambridge responds to one of the greatest educational challenges of today: classroom diversity and the need to prepare all students for a global future. It is an agreement with a strong social impact, which recognises and supports the essential role of teachers in public schools and offers every student the same opportunities to develop their potential.
Alejandro Castex, Managing Director of Sanoma Spain, says: "At Santillana, part of Sanoma Group, we believe in the transformative power of education and work every day to offer the best tools to enable every student to reach their full potential. This agreement with Cambridge represents a decisive step for Spanish public schools: we want every student, regardless of their background, to have access to quality English language learning and new opportunities for the future. Our priority is to support teachers, students, and families with innovative solutions tailored to the reality of the classroom. After more than 60 years of commitment to education at Santillana, we are convinced that this alliance will mark a turning point in the way English is learned and taught in our country."
Aída García, Managing Director of Cambridge University Press & Assessment in Spain, adds: "With this alliance, we are bringing a piece of Cambridge to every corner of Spain. Our commitment is to provide students, families and teachers with the best educational tools, so that everyone can access high-quality English and prepare for an increasingly global world."
With this agreement, Santillana and Cambridge reaffirm their leadership in innovation and educational excellence and take a step towards a more inclusive teaching model that is connected to the challenges of the future. Above all, it marks a turning point: excellent English, accessible to every student, every classroom and every public school.
