IMY launches safety app for young people on social media

FantomApp is aimed at children between 10 and 15 years old. The app contains interactive tools to protect their personal data on social media.

- Social media is a big part of children's and young people's lives. Our hope is that FantomApp will make it easier for young people to increase their knowledge about data protection and their rights, but also to make life online safer, says Malin Blixt, Head of Guidance, Innovation and Technology at IMY.

With the help of the app, users can create secure account settings on social media, test their passwords and blur photos. FantomApp also contains advice on how to handle fake profiles and what to do if you have been hacked, bullied or scammed online.

- We know that almost 9 out of 10 parents are worried about not being able to protect their children online. Encouraging your child to use FantomApp is a simple way to support them, says Malin Blixt.

FantomApp is free to download and is available on the App Store and Google Play, as well as in a web version.

IMY has previously published basic information about data protection for children and young people and their guardians on its website, imy.se/ung. This autumn, IMY will launch the teaching material "Your Life Online", aimed at pupils in grades 4-7.

FantomApp was developed by the French data protection authority, the Commission nationale de l'informatique et des libertés (CNIL), in collaboration with young people in France. IMY has now translated and adapted the app for Swedish conditions.

The app was created after CNIL conducted a study among school pupils, which showed that the pupils lacked sufficient knowledge about data protection. The pupils wanted a digital and interactive way to learn more about their rights online. The app was launched in France in French and English at the end of 2025. The app has been developed with funding from the European Union.
