FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE JUNE 20,2025

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Statement on the Passing of DPW City Employee Juan Peralta Sr. Mount Vernon, NY - It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that the City of Mount Vernon

announces the passing of one of our own, Mr. Juan Peralta Sr., a dedicated employee of the Department of Public Works, who was seriously injured Tuesday while performing his duties as a tree

trimmer near the intersection of 5th Avenue and 5th Street. Despite undergoing emergency surgery and receiving critical medical care, Mr. Peralta tragically succumbed to his injuries this afternoon.

Mr. Peralta brought with him more than 55 years of expertise as an experienced arborist and horticulturist. Prior to joining the City of Mount Vernon, he worked for Alpine Tree Service for 35 years and

at the New York Botanical Gardens for 20 years. He began his career with the City over a decade ago as a part-time hourly laborer. Through his strong work ethic and commitment to public service, he

advanced to the role of Motor Equipment Operator, where he handled sanitation trucks, and eventually progressed to serve as a tree trimmer. Over the years, he served in many capacities and was

known for his reliability, humility, and dedication to the Mount Vernon community. Juan Peralta Sr. was more than a colleague - he was a respected and valued member of our city family. His loss is

deeply felt across the Department of Public Works and throughout the City of Mount Vernon. "This is a devastating loss for the Mount Vernon team, the Peralta family, and our community," said Mayor

Shawyn Patterson-Howard. "His work ethic and passion for this work, his family, and this community were exceptional. He will be sorely missed." We extend our heartfelt condolences to Mr. Peralta's

family, friends, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers. Additional information, including memorial arrangements, will be shared when

available.
