The City of Fairfield, in partnership with Republic Services, is hosting a free compost giveaway event for Fairfield residents on Saturday, September 13, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., or until supplies run out. The event will be held at the Dunnell Nature Park and Education Center at 3351 Hillridge Drive in Fairfield. Master Gardeners from the UCCE Solano will also be onsite to offer guidance on composting and share other horticultural tips.
The compost will be delivered in bulk, and residents are required to bring their own containers to collect the compost in. Please note that trailers will not be permitted at the event. While this is a self-serve event, shovels and gloves will be provided for residents to use. Proof of residency will be required to participate.
The compost is sourced from local compost facilities and is listed by the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) for use in organic production, approved as an Organic Input Fertilizing Material by the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA), and is certified with the United States Composting Council's Seal of Testing Assurance. The compost is made from recycled green material, food waste, and woody material collected from residential organic carts.
Compost giveaway events are part of the City's sustainability and Senate Bill 1383 (SB 1383) goals. Signed into law in 2022, SB 1383 establishes statewide organic recycling requirements for residents and businesses to reduce emissions of short-lived climate pollutants and greenhouse gases. The law mandates that organic waste, including food and yard waste, be separated from garbage so it can be diverted from landfills.
