Thanks to Portlanders across the city, more than 4,000 trees were planted in 2025 through the Urban Forestry's Yard Tree Giveaway! It was year nine for the city program that focuses on making trees accessible to people who want to plant on private property.
You can see from this map, trees were planted in nearly every neighborhood with some large clusters in Southeast, North, and Northeast.
Neighborhoods that received the most trees:
While all Portland neighborhoods can benefit from more trees, it is crucial to plant trees in areas where they are needed most. Median household income and current tree canopy cover are used to identify Urban Forestry priority service areas.
To be most accessible to these neighborhoods, Urban Forestry holds pick-up events and free delivery in many of the priority service areas. It is a success that the top six neighborhoods (listed above) are all priority service areas. In fact, the top 12 neighborhoods receiving the most trees are priority service areas. Top 12 neighborhoods also included South Tabor, Portsmouth, Foster-Powell, Piedmont, St. Johns, and Lents.
Other goals of the program include planting for people who need an accommodation, giving away high-quality trees that will provide the most environmental services, and increasing tree cover on private property.
