Solar Power Comes to Dix Park

The Dix Park Chapel now glows with the power of the sun. The Greg Poole Jr. All Faiths Chapel has a new 67.5-kilowatt solar system, which helps the facility run on renewable energy and reduce operating costs for years to come.

This solar project is expected to offset about 45 percent of the chapel's annual electricity use. The effort adds to a growing list of sustainability features at Dix Park, including the new Gipson Play Plaza and the Sunflower Field.

"Projects like this are about more than saving on energy bills - they're about powering our community more sustainably. Sustainability projects at Dix Park also enable us to educate the millions of people who visit the park about solar power and sustainability," said Megan Anderson, City of Raleigh Sustainability Officer.

The project advances Raleigh's Community Climate Action Plan (CCAP)and goal of reducing community-wide greenhouse gas emissions 80 percent by 2050.

Raleigh's Solar Momentum

The Dix Park Chapel installation is one of several solar projects across the City. Other highlights include:

  • Solar-powered EV charging stationsat select City parks.
  • Solarize the Triangle, an award-winning program has helped residents install solar panels at home, lower their energy bills, and increase access to clean energy.
  • Three new rooftop solar projects underway at City operations centers. Combined, these installations are expected to provide 612 kW of generating capacity, cut about 1.2 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions each year, and save the City an estimated $30,000 annually.

The glow-up at the Dix Park Chapel is just one more way Raleigh is working toward a brighter, cleaner energy future. The project is a partnership between the City's Office of Sustainability; Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources; and Engineering Services.
