View "The Last Cowboy" exhibition through Sept. 9 in WNC's Bristlecone Gallery.
A selection of platinum prints by photographer Adam Jahiel will be on display through Sept. 9 in the Bristlecone Gallery on the Western Nevada College campus. The exhibition features images from Jahiel's The Last Cowboy series, which documents the lives of cowboys and the traditions of ranching in the American West.
In 1989, Adam Jahiel was sent to a ranch on the California-Nevada border to photograph the famed rodeo bull Skoal's Pacific Bell for The Sacramento Bee. That assignment began a long-term exploration of the cowboys of the Great Basin. Every summer from 2006, Jahiel traveled to parts of Idaho, Nevada and Oregon, capturing images of the region's cowboys, landscapes and historic ranches.
Adam Jahiel is an internationally known photographer. His work reaches from the American West to such places as Kyrgyzstan, India, China, Europe, and Africa. His atmospheric and dynamic images have been exhibited and published internationally. His photographs are in the collections of the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno, the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, as well as private and corporate collections.
The works in this exhibition are on loan from the Armuth Hellwinkel Family Collection. Collectors Darrell Armuth and Donna Hellwinkel have been building their collection since 2005, focusing on significant artists connected to Nevada and the broader West. Selections from their collection have been exhibited at venues such as the Elko County Museum during the 40th National Cowboy Poetry Gathering, the Wilbur D. May Museum, and as part of a Nevada Arts Council traveling exhibition. Western Nevada College is grateful for their generous loan from their collection.
The gallery is free and open to the public, Monday to Friday (except holidays) from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is located in the Bristlecone Building on the Carson City Campus, 2201 West College Parkway, Carson City.
This exhibit is an official America250 Nevada event and a partner in the statewide Semiquincentennial celebration. As a partner, this event or program is designed to educate, engage, and celebrate the state's contributions to the American story.
