WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Budget Committee Chairman Jodey Arrington (R-Texas) released the following statement on this week's implementation of the One Big Beautiful Bill's enhanced work requirements for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
"The rampant corruption exposed in Minnesota highlights the pervasive waste, fraud, and abuse that has become endemic to our nation's social safety net. Minnesota is not an isolated incident. It is the symptom of a system with inadequate guardrails and vulnerabilities that invite fraudsters to siphon funds away from those the program was intended to serve.
"The One Big Beautiful Bill took historic strides to safeguard taxpayer dollars and protect services for the most vulnerable among us, restoring the dignity of work by implementing new, commonsense work requirements for able-bodied adults.
"This week, less than a year since the enactment of the One Big Beautiful Bill, I'm proud to report these enhanced guardrails are in full effect for SNAP, strengthening the safety net and enforcing personal responsibility, program integrity, and state accountability. Responsible stewardship of these programs is critical to ensuring their long-term sustainability and essential to protecting taxpayers and vulnerable Americans alike."
BACKGROUND
The One Big Beautiful Bill strengthens the 20-hour-per-week SNAP work requirement for able-bodied adults, encouraging work, job training, and education among those who are able.
The One Big Beautiful Bill also closed loopholes that some states used to completely waive work requirements for able-bodied adults, protecting the integrity of SNAP while promoting self-sufficiency to create a thriving economy full of employed workers.
