The City of Fort Worth joined students, educators and community partners Friday, Dec. 12, to unveil the new "Hands of Unity" mural at 1000 W. Lowden St.
The mural was created by students from I.M. Terrell Academy in partnership with the Park & Recreation Department's Graffiti Abatement Program and its new Palette Program, which supports community-led public art projects citywide.
For more than 20 years, the Graffiti Abatement Program has expanded beyond graffiti removal to include murals as a tool for neighborhood beautification and vandalism prevention. The Palette Program now provides artists, residents and schools with resources and guidance to create meaningful and sustainable public art across Fort Worth.
Councilmember Janette Martinez (District 11) highlighted the history of the site and noted the new mural fully replaces the artwork installed 13 years ago.
Councilmember Elizabeth Beck (District 9) emphasized the strong community involvement behind the project, including design submissions from students and residents. Several of the painted hands featured in the mural were drawn from community contributions.
More than 30 students contributed over 600 service hours to design and complete the mural. City staff prepared the site and provided supplies, tools and on-site support.
Art teacher Mrs. Abbasi and student speaker Bridget Musenda shared how the "Hands of Unity" theme represents collaboration, connection and neighborhood pride.
