The University of Toledo has earned continued accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) for the next five years, after successfully completing its mid-cycle review process. Developed by a steering committee, the assurance argument, also known as a self-study, provided detailed evidence demonstrating how UToledo meets the four criteria required for accreditation by the HLC.

The criteria for accreditation include: Mission; Integrity: Ethical and Responsible Conduct; Teaching and Learning for Student Success; and Sustainability: Institutional Effectiveness, Resources and Planning.

A team of five peer reviewers appointed by the HLC conducted an evaluation of the university's submission. Following their review, the team issued a final written report to the HLC's Institutional Actions Council, who voted to accept the findings and reaffirm UToledo's accreditation status for the remainder of its 10-year accreditation cycle.

In its feedback, the HLC commended the university for several key strengths. The reviewers noted strong alignment between the institution's mission, practices and outcomes, as well as a clear commitment to workforce development, experiential learning, applied research and community engagement.

The HLC also recognized UToledo's robust framework for integrity and ethical conduct across governance, operations, academic freedom and research activities. Additional praise was given for UToledo's effective teaching and learning environment, student support services, and its responsible approach to planning, governance and resource management.

The reaffirmation underscores UToledo's continued efforts to maintain high academic standards and serve both its students and the broader community.

The Higher Learning Commission, founded in 1895, is one of six institutional accreditors in the United States. UToledo has been accredited by the commission since 1922, and the former Medical College of Ohio and Medical University of Ohio had been accredited since 1980.

UToledo's next HLC comprehensive evaluation, including a site visit from peer reviewers, will take place in 2031-32.
