Inside the data: How Artemis won Geneva’s starts

Los Gallos may have owned the victory, but it was Nathan Outteridge's Artemis - a key contender in the race to Abu Dhabi - which won Geneva's starts.

Outteridge's Swedish outfit posted mixed group racing results (1-5-6-4-2), finishing fourth in Group A and seventh overall to pick up four points in total. But this doesn't reflect the team's stellar starting performance, which saw them top two key metrics.

Artemis were both the quickest across the line - taking an average of just 0.7 seconds - and were consistently positioned closest to the line too - an average of 1m.

By comparison, the group racing leaders - ROCKWOOL Racing from Group A and BONDS Flying Roos from Group B - took 5.8 seconds and 2.1 seconds to cross the line respectively, and were positioned an average of 8m and 9m away.

The worst performers in these metrics meanwhile were Germany by Deutsche Bank (9.5 seconds) and Emirates GBR (25 meters).

Meanwhile, it was Tom Slingsby's BONDS Flying Roos, who topped the data for the quickest starting boat speed - an average of 14.1 km/h, while Mubadala Brazil had the slowest starts - an average of 8 km/h. Artemis sat in the middle of the group, with an average starting speed of 9.4 km/h.

The Bonds Flying Roos' quick starting speed resulted in the Australians recorded the best Mark 1 position - 2.2, while the Swedes clocked an average position of 2.8. Erik Heil's German team meanwhile recorded the lowest - an average of 5.2.

The Australians were able to defend their position around the course, resulting in an average finish position of 2.6 - the same as Nicolai Sehested's Danish team. Artemis meanwhile were unable to maintain their Mark 1 position, dropping places through the fleet and resulting in a finishing position of 3.6.

Geneva was a key event in Artemis's pursuit of the Grand Final - with the first two spots already booked by Bonds Flying Roos and Los Gallos. But a lackluster performance from the Americans - who were rocked by a double injury blow in the week of racing - means Artemis currently sit third overall heading into Dubai.

Their stellar racing starts could prove crucial in their battle to reach the Grand Final, but the Swedes will face fierce competition from the Americans and British when racing resumes at the Emirates Dubai Sail Grand Prix on November 21/22.
