From 12-16 May, Cockpit will present 'The Cockpit Edit: An Exhibition of Leading and Next Generation Makers', the charity's first-ever selling exhibition and part of a week of activity planned at Cockpit's Bloomsbury location for London Craft Week.
Visitors will have the opportunity to discover and purchase more than 100 unique pieces created by over 90 makers in their studios at Bloomsbury and Deptford. This ambitious exhibition will include work by both leading craftspeople and emerging talents and serve as a sneak preview for Cockpit's Summer Open Studios in June.
Featuring more than twenty craft disciplines - from luxury jewellery to fine ceramics, glass and textiles, wooden vessels, contemporary sculpture and wearable art - each of the works on display will be available to purchase exclusively during London Craft Week.
MAKER DEMONSTRATIONS
Alongside the exhibition, from Tuesday 13 May to Thursday 15 May visitors can also enjoy a series of demonstrations by makers in their studios. This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to see makers at work, learn about their creative journeys and gain insight into their processes and inspirations in the workshops where they create their masterpieces.
Each 30-minute demonstration will serve as a deep dive into a specific craft skill. Over 12 specialist techniques will be demonstrated throughout the week, including paper marbling, enamelling, guitar making, basket making, textile and paper weaving, natural dying, slab moulding, and crocheting with gold, silver and diamonds.
Confirmed demonstrations include:
• A demonstration of the ancient Japanese craft of 'kami-Ito' - transforming paper into thread - with artist and weaver Kendall Clarke
• An introduction to Roman micro mosaics, a rare and highly intricate technique developed in 18th century Rome, with mosaic maker Eniko Leanyvari
• A demonstration of wheel throwing and hand building techniques with ceramic sculptor and educator Kerry Hastings
Demonstration tickets are £12.50 and include guaranteed same-day admission to the exhibition.
Spaces are limited so booking early is recommended. Tickets will be available from mid-April.
THE COCKPIT EFFECT
Cockpit will also launch its annual impact report, The Cockpit Effect, on Monday 12 May from 3-5 pm at Cockpit Bloomsbury. The report provides insights into the craft businesses working with Cockpit, the challenges these businesses face and the transformative effect that Cockpit's support can have for both emerging and established makers.
The full report will be published on 12 May 2025 and available to download at cockpitstudios.org.
