The Walker County Board of Commissioners approved another historically low millage rate at their September meeting. The Board rolled back the rate used to calculate property taxes to the lowest point since 2012.
The new millage rate for a home with a fair market value of $250,000 will result in a property tax reduction of $17.34 in the unincorporated areas. Owners of that same home living in an incorporated area will save about $37.44 annually in county maintenance and operation taxes.
The new rate of 5.151 mills marks a 3.33% reduction over last year for residents who own property in the unincorporated areas. Property owners in cities will see a nearly 5.5% percent reduction, as the rate was reduced from 7.027 mills in 2024 to 6.645 mills in 2025.
Property owners may experience additional tax savings thanks to action taken last week by the Walker County Board of Education. The Board of Education voted to adopt the full rollback millage rate of 14.418 mill, holding the line on school related property taxes despite rising property values.
For a property owner with a homestead exemption, the two tax rates combined will result in a savings of $72.62 on a home valued at $250,000, versus taxes on a home of the same value in 2024.
For residents who live in a city and have a homestead exemption, the two tax rates combined work out to a savings of $92.72 for a property owner with a home valued at $250,000, versus taxes on a home of the same value in 2024.
Property that increased in value from one year to the next may experience a higher tax bill as a result of the higher value, but that does not mean their tax rate increased.
