Jianchun Li murdered Monica Moon Lee and Hee Sook Park on June 24, 2023
DIAMOND BAR, Calif. - A Los Angeles County jury found caretaker Jianchun Li guilty of murdering two elderly women at an assisted living facility in Diamond Bar in June 2023 and also found that he was legally sane when he committed the crimes. Li faces life in prison without the possibility of parole.
"Three years ago, Monica Moon Lee and Hee Sook Park's lives were brutally taken by Jianchun Li, the very person expected to keep them safe. I thank the jury for holding Li responsible and finding him sane when he made the decision to kill two vulnerable women who were entrusted to his care," Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman said. "We hope this verdict brings a measure of closure to the victims' loved ones and the Diamond Bar community. Justice was served and Li will be held fully accountable for his horrific and senseless crimes."
On Aug. 20, 2026, a Los Angeles County jury found Li (dob 7/28/82) guilty of two counts of first-degree murder and found the special circumstance of multiple murders to be true. On Aug. 27, the jury delivered a verdict at the sanity phase of the trial and upheld Li's guilt, rejecting the not guilty by reason of insanity defense.
Sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 3 in Department P of Pomona Courthouse South.
"Li's conviction is a testament to the tremendous work the prosecutors in our Elder Abuse Section do every day to fight for elders and dependent adults, who are among our community's most vulnerable victims," said District Attorney Hochman. "I thank Deputy District Attorneys Michael Matoba and Stephanie Chavez for their tireless dedication and commitment to obtaining justice for these victims and their families."
On June 24, 2023, Li was working as an overnight caretaker at Happy Homes Care, a residential care facility for elderly women located at 23801 Sapphire Canyon Road. Shortly before 7:00 a.m. that morning, Li ushered Monica Moon Lee, 75, who used a walker, to the bathroom and placed a plastic bag over her head, wrapped electrical tape around her neck, and strangled her. Thirty minutes later, Li then took Hee Sook Park, 83, to the same bathroom and murdered her in the same manner. Firefighters responded to the scene and attempted lifesaving measures. Both victims were declared deceased at the scene.
Case KA133243 was prosecuted by the Elder Abuse Section of the White Collar Crime Division and investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
