Parks and Recreation Invites Residents to Guide the Future of Historic Des Moines Park
Des Moines, Iowa - Friday, September 25, 2026 - The City of Des Moines looking to the future of its historic Greenwood Park, and Des Moines residents have the chance to help write the next chapter for this treasured piece of the city.

- Time: 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. and 5 - 7 p.m.
- Location: Greenwood Park
- Description: In the green space along 45th street, just south of the pond
The Parks and Recreation Department will kick off a public planning process beginning with input sessions from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. and 5 - 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 7 at Greenwood Park. Attendees will be encouraged to share their experiences, discuss priorities for improvements and explore possibilities for the park.
"For generations, Greenwood Park has been a place to gather, play, enjoy the outdoors and connect with one another and the landscape around us," Des Moines Parks and Recreation Development and Planning Administrator Daniel Calvert said. "We're excited to hear what our community loves about Greenwood today and what they envision for its future. We look forward to building that vision together to honor the park's history, celebrates what makes it special and explores its potential for generations to come."At the first meeting, planning staff will focus on hearing and gathering residents' experiences, ideas and priorities for Greenwood Park that will be used to develop a plan that will be brought back for public review and feedback at a second round of public meetings.
An online questionnaire will be available after the meeting on the Greenwood Park Project website to allow participation from those unable to attend the first public meeting.
Currently, the City has no dedicated funding to implement improvements at Greenwood Park, but staff will look to build a vision that will lead to identification of grant opportunities and fundraising strategy for Greenwood Park.
Fundraising efforts for this project are being coordinated by the Friends of Des Moines Parks.
