TSTC’s Harlingen campus gears up for a thriving spring semester

(HARLINGEN, Texas) - Texas State Technical College 's Harlingen campus will welcome more than 2,500 students to begin the spring 2025 semester on Monday, Jan. 13.

While some of the students are stepping into college life for the first time, others are continuing to sharpen their skills in preparation for entering the Texas workforce.

Among them are returning students Jacob Bocanegra and Mariana Macias and new student Lorenzo Spears.

Bocanegra, of San Benito, is studying for an Associate of Applied Science degree in Engineering Graphics and Design Technology. He said he is looking forward to tackling more challenging class assignments.

"I enjoy when a drafting assignment stumps me," he said. "It makes me think of a different strategy that I can do to complete an assignment."

Macias, of Santa Rosa, is studying for an Associate of Applied Science degree in Cybersecurity. She said she chose the program because it has some similarities to law enforcement.

"My former high school law enforcement teacher suggested I pursue a degree in cybersecurity," she said. "(He) said I would learn the basics of the law and how to fend off cyberattackers."

Spears, of Weslaco, is pursuing an Associate of Applied Science degree in Wind Energy Technology. His interest in renewable resources motivated him to enroll in the program.

"I want to be challenged in a technical aspect to contribute to positive change in the economy through renewable energy," he said.

Eladio Jaimez, provost at TSTC's Harlingen campus, said it is TSTC's responsibility to give students the best college experience possible.

"(They) can expect the best training and instruction by a quality faculty in the Rio Grande Valley," he said.
