Phased plan to strengthen Norman Water System progressing week of January 19, 2026

January 20, 2026

In a continued phased plan to strengthen the City of Norman's water distribution system, chlorine administration sites at city wells - a public water source now required by the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) to contain disinfectant residuals - have been installed by City staff. As a result, Norman water customers located along Tecumseh road from I-35 to 36th Avenue NE may experience slight tastes or smells of chlorine in their water. The residual provides a safeguard for customers in the event that lines carrying well water are ever compromised with the introduction of unintended dirt, which could grow harmful bacteria. Installations will remain in place moving forward, until the City of Norman Groundwater Treatment Plant is completed.

In March 2025, Norman City Council approved advancement of the Groundwater Treatment Plant. The project, a result of more than 10 years of planning, accounts as the final phase of well water disinfectant protection for Normanites. This project will bring the City into full compliance with the latest DEQ regulations. Council approval of the project was achieved after a June 2023 vote in which Normanites passed a proposition to allow for a portion of utility rates to go toward plant construction.
